I wanted to share with everyone some details and images from our one-day Wedding Workshop, held ten days ago. We had a great group of photographers – from beginning levels to advanced, and from part time to full time. It started out with everybody getting to know each other at my studio in Roswell. This was a great time to bond and make friends. We began by showing everyone the DVD-promo slideshow in my studio theater which every bride is able to see. This is a huge part of our high-booking business. Then, we did a critique of each photographer’s images which everyone had e-mailed me before the workshop, either photos they wanted help with – or two of their favorites.
The critique session worked out great for everyone and opened their eyes to other ways of seeing images, how lighting is such an important part of a great image, and how seeing light and making light will completely change an image. After the critique, everyone was surprised when we started going over the business side of wedding photography, because I had everybody show me how they spoke with prospective brides during a phone call, how they would plan a schedule for different types of weddings, and what their plan B was for strange situations that could (and most certainly do) occur at a wedding. This was a very educational part of the workshop, because wedding photography is so much more than taking cool pictures.
Then we covered workflow, marketing and touched on album design. After lunch we had a Q&A session and a drawing for door prizes sponsor-donated for the workshop. Next, we prepared for the fun part – a photo shoot with our model! One of our November brides agreed to model for the workshop – and the Lowe’s Hotel in Atlanta allowed us to photograph our model at their hotel. I’ll be showing images in another week that the workshop attendees shot during the workshop, but I’m still waiting to get images in from everybody. So, here are some shots that Brittany and I took during the workshop …below.
Even though we had lots of rain and were limited to mostly shooting inside, we had a great time and got some good photographs. The weather showed everyone just how on any wedding day a good photographer has to find ways to create great images …regardless of either weather or time of day. Want to come to a Moreland workshop? Just contact us about our two-day November event that will focus mostly on portrait photography … or we can customize a class for you or a group of your friends. Thanks. Great photography can be your passion, too! Sincerely, Mike
