For many Women, maternity can be a difficult time, with self-image issues as well as various other problems that come along with pregnancy. Capturing a beautiful moment during this stage of your life can help to solidify it as a time of change, growth, and warmth. It’s done to make you feel beautiful and proud! Below, we’re going to explain the process of taking a maternity photo shoot so that when you book your appointment it’ll be seamless process.
Choose your goal:
Before booking an appointment, you’ll want to decide what your goals are. Maternity photography can be done in a variety of settings, with many poses and clothes, and can also be made to fit in multiple formats. Figuring out the type of shoot you like is important to understand the environment the photo is going to be at (e.g. in a studio or outside in the environment). This is where it’s important to have choose an experienced photographer. Decide what you want the photo for; is it a wall mounted home piece? Is it for a photo book, or is it just for an instagram photo? What are the dimensions of the image that you want? These questions will be important to understand prior to discussing the ideas you have with your photographer. This way they can plan out how large of a space they need, what kind of gear to bring, and how long to rent the set for. It will also help them decide on a quote to give you for the price of the shoot. Once you’ve answered these questions, it’s time to book an appointment!
The Investment for a Quality Image
Finding an experienced photographer will ease the stresses in planning and designing your maternity shoot. With a good photographer who is experienced in posing, knowledgable about locations and the best times to shoot would make the shoot a lot easier so you can just focus on keeping you and the baby happy. - Where you are in your pregnancy (we recommend the 32 week mark)
- A Hairdresser and/or Makeup Artist
- A Photographer with experience in posing
- If you would like your partner, previous kids (if you have any), or anyone else in the shoot as well

Picking an Outfit and Location:
Work with your photographer to pick an outfit and location that you like. It’s important to bring up any questions or concerns you have so that you can be sure to achieve the outcome you wish to receive. We recommend our clients wear something light that can flow, but also that highlights the belly. Remember, certain colors contrast each other. Depending on your outfit, their are certain clothing we would not recommend to pair together. This important when wearing a lighter outfit and being careful with undergarments worn with it-we suggest to wear more nude tones so that your outfit wouldn’t be too distracting. A nice background like the one pictured above helps to highlight curves, and the rest is up to you to pose! By preparing prior to the shoot, we like to help the client practice an S pose that helps them to look natural and elegant.

Make sure to discuss what you and your partner want, and during the consultation the photographer can try and decide the best way to incorporate the both of you. Feeling Comfortable with Maternity Photography
Communication is essential between your photographer and you but most of the pressure resides on the photographer and how they are going to direct the shoot to make sure you’re satisfied. A goal of any maternity photographer is to help you feel beautiful with your baby bump! If something isn’t working for you, let them know. We can do some touching up later with editing software, but your pose and comfort level will determine the quality of the photo. Try and get loose and comfortable before your shoot.
