Underwater Photography: What to Know Before Diving In

An underwater photoshoot is magical. Water brings so many countless and amazing elements to portraiture. Dresses and fabrics can be manipulated in the water to create some unique and striking compositions. The reflections that come off the surface of the water reflect the subject of the photo with an almost dream-like quality.

And underwater photography is on the rise.

An underwater portrait is unique and stands out from the crowd. Underwater shoots allow you to express your creativity in different ways from the standard portrait and it’s sure to be an eye-stopper in your home. If you’re interested in doing underwater photography, here’s what you should know before your shoot:

Consider your underwater environment.

What environment would you like to be in? Do you want to be in an outdoor pool or an indoor pool? Or perhaps a lake or the ocean? Consider your environment carefully and plan the shoot around the location you pick. A swimming pool and the Pacific Ocean are two very different environments!

Remember your props!

Bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings will add an important element to your underwater portrait that you don’t want to be without. If not jewelry, some sort of accent piece goes a long way to improve your underwater photoshoot!

Make sure your makeup is waterproof.

The last thing you want is runny makeup during your portrait shoot! If you plan on wearing makeup, make sure it’s waterproof. I recommended using adding eyelash extension and color to your lips to bring impact to your portrait. I also recommend using lip dye and not lipstick.

Be prepared to hold your breath.

Underwater shoots can take several hours. You’re going to get wet, and you’re going to need some air support. Make sure you’re prepared to hold your breath for a significant amount of time. If you can, practice holding your breath before the shoot.

Wear lightweight clothing.

Lightweight clothing is much easier to manipulate in an underwater setting. If you’re wearing a dress, make sure it’s lightweight so you can get more out of your photos!

Choose your print format wisely.

If you’re getting a print of your underwater portrait, consider the format. Personally, I think underwater portraits look best on metal and acrylic prints because they have a sheen that makes them look wet. Consider your budget and what works best for you.
