We did these winter family portraits with the Stamey family last year. We have been working with the Stamey family since their daughter Elizabeth was two years old. It rarely snows in Georgia and it is even more rare for snow to stick enough for great photos. When we saw that there were inches of snow on the ground, we knew exactly what we needed to do.
The Stamey family is very active and outdoorsy, and each year we try to showcase that in their photos. It gets a little more challenging trying to find something new and different to do every year.
The day we scheduled our shoot with the Stamey family, Atlanta got an uncharacteristic 8 inches of snow. I called the Stamey family and they asked if we should reschedule, but there was no way we were going to do that. How often do you get a snow scene in Atlanta, Georgia to do your winter family portraits in?
We met at a historic home in Roswell. We used some beautiful scenery there that was made even more incredible by the fresh snow. As always, we wanted to get some traditional photos that the Stamey family could use as a holiday card. We also wanted to get some fun shots that showcased the family’s personality.
We brought some sleds along for the Stamey family to use as props and ended up having to put the sleds on top of a sidewalk. After some trial and error, we found that the sleds would sink under the snow because it was so deep.
Since snow in Georgia is so rare, why not end a portrait session in the snow with a family snowball fight? Even the family’s dog had a blast!
Chrismas Tree Farm
About a week before the snow came, we did another part of the Stamey family’s session at a Christmas tree farm. They wanted to do some nighttime shots, which turned out beautifully.
At the Christmas tree farm, there was an indoor area that had trees that were sprayed to look like they were covered in snow. We used those for a few of the photos at the Christmas tree farm. Funnily enough, we didn’t really need the fake snow because about a week later we got the real thing that served as a beautiful backdrop for the Stamey’s winter family portraits.
